ModalitiesGeneral Information

Modalities: Part of what makes massage so varied and dynamic is the large variety of massage modalities used.  Listed below are descriptions of the modalities used.

Swedish
In the West, most people are familiar with Swedish massage.  Swedish massage includes large gliding strokes, kneading, vibration, friction and tapping.  Relaxation is the desired therapeutic outcome for this type of massage.
Petrissage on Right Mid-Trapezius

Deep tissue

By applying deep pressure, muscles that are chronically tense are released.  Other positive effects are increased circulation in the area of focus, lymphatic drainage, and reduced fibrotic tissue development.

Deep Tissue on Leg

Lomi Lomi
Lomi Lomi is an ancient Hawaiian healing art that is passed down from generation to generation.  This modality captures the true meaning of ‘holistic’ because it connects mind, body and spirit.  Mana (energy) that is thought to cause illness is removed via the appendages.

Chi Nei Tsang
Based on techniques used by Gilles Marin, this Taoist manipulative therapy is designed to move chi energy through the abdominal organs.  This therapy balances internal dysfunctions and releases energy blockages by using breathing, manual manipulations and meditation.  This therapy is particularly beneficial for those with digestive discomfort, adhesions in reproductive organs, and general abdominal tension.

Cupping Therapy
Chinese cupping therapy is used to affect the body’s tissues 2-4 inches in depth.  Originally used during acupuncture treatments, cupping therapy is used to reduce energetic stagnation.  Stationary and massage cupping works very well for tense muscles, for dissolving adhesive scar tissue and for joint inflammation.  Cups may be used with or without magnets.  Some people may experience skin pigmentation at the cupping site and a sedative effect on the nervous system.

Visceral Manipulation
These techniques were developed by Frenchman Jean-Pierre Barral, D.O. (Dr. of Osteopathic Medicine).  Visceral manipulation is based on the idea that the interrelationship of structure and function of the organs is similar to that of other structures in the body.  Similarly to the musculoskeletal system, organ dysfunction can also be addressed by manipulation.  Thus, restrictions in the ligaments and fascia surrounding the organs can be alleviated and the organ functions more effectively as a result.

Aromatherapy
Essential oils of varying medicinal properties are used throughout your sessions depending on your particular needs.  If you require unscented oils and lotions during your session, please inform the therapist.

Facilitated stretching/Sports Massage
This bodywork session is a must for athletes of all types who are recovering from an injury, about to run a marathon or hold extra tension from intensive training.  Facilitated stretching uses isometric and post-isometric contraction to increase range of motion in joints and lengthen muscles.  This stretching massage does not interfere with athletic performance and ensures stretching only within a pain free range.

Thai Massage
This modality provides a ‘yoga’ experience for the client.  The body is stretched and manipulated and the therapist uses various body positions to increase range of motion.

Ear Candling
Ear candling was originally developed by Native Americans to address sinus issues, ear pain, ear infections, tinnitus and a variety of other issues.
